That's a really good point, now that you mention it. I do vaguely remember hearing about PSOH's translation issues and the second translator's trials, but I'd completely forgotten about them until you brought them up. Yeah, as much as translations have improved over the time as much, I find the idea of the official one being the only available one distinctly unappealing, considering how many have been badly translated in the past. It doesn't matter much if I'm not particularly into the fandom, but once I am, I do start paying attention to differences in translation. And considering anime, by its niche market status, pretty much has to attract a relatively devoted fanbase, ignoring what the devoted fans want is just dumb.
But yeah, I think there's a giant tendency in fandom lately to start thinking the official translation is always the best! I really don't particularly enjoy trusting in a company's ~good intentions~ and hoping that they'll do what fandom wants them to, because I've seen them fuck that up way too many times. I guess what it comes down to for me is that I don't want them to shut down scanslation distribution because I don't trust the current manga companies enough to feel comfortable with them being my only possible manga suppliers. I just...don't.
