A mama robin has taken up residence in a nest in a tree next to my back patio. The nest was occupied last year by a robin, too. Of course, there's no way to know if it's the same robin sitting there now as sat there last year. Regardless, I was surprised to see the nest occupied again. I didn't think robins did that sort of recycling. From what I was able to find on the subject, it's not common but does happen occasionally. Has anyone else seen this sort of reuse of old nests?

The Quenda (or Southern Brown Bandicoot, Isoodon obesulus) is a small marsupial of the South-West of Western Australia, and other pockets around the coast of Australia.

Under threat from clearing and feral animals (due to both predation and competition for food), it was very unexpected to see one on the edge of the CBD, in Queen Victoria Gardens in Claisebrook. It was even more unexpected to see it in the middle of the day, right next to the main walk-path!

They are listed as Endangered in Australia.

I took these a while ago and kept forgetting to post them. Just some more photos of birds on our balcony, including a new set we hadn't seen before.

We'd been seeing one redwing blackbird for a while but later it was joined by a second one. Or possibly these were two entirely different birds given their more colorful markings

When I was at the botanical garden, I went into the glasshouse this time to look at the butterflies. I must have timed it right near a release because there were butterflies galore. One rested in my hair for awhile, and I got one to sit on my hand, too. I wanted to share a few of the pictures I took. I hope you like them! :D

N.B. Please feel free to post your glee on any day of the week; the Friday glee is just to get the ball rolling.

To enhance this week's glee: totally stealing from UKC, but this vid of James Pearson's new E10 7a really is great.

How Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon Manage That 'Big Sick' Illness in Real Life
by Ashley Lee, at the Hollywood Reporter

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/big-sick-emilys-illness-is-real-based-a-distressing-true-story-1015698

It’s not ideal to fall in love with someone who’s in a coma, but that’s what happens to Kumail Nanjiani in The Big Sick — and in real life. The Silicon Valley actor co-wrote the romantic dramedy with wife Emily V. Gordon, based on their actual courtship (Zoe Kazan portrays her onscreen, and Holly Hunter and Ray Romano play her parents).

The titular sickness remains unnamed throughout most of the movie, as it was to Gordon for much of her life.

I created [community profile] 10variations for Dreamwidth because it was an old concept from Livejournal that I used to love and many people felt inspired by, and I thought it would be nice to recreate it for a better, safer and cleaner platform like Dreamwidth :3

It's a community where you post a batch of 10 icons each time, made out of the same image but all different (according to a set of themes). It's best if you look at the profile to understand the concept! I hope you will like it and participate, I will participate also :3

On Garden Pollinators

Jun. 20th, 2017 05:59 pm
[personal profile] robby posting in [community profile] gardening
Over the years, I've noticed that my garden has a range of different pollinators. Sure, the European honey bees do show up, but it's for the big events, like almond or lemon trees in blossom. Less glamorous pollinators, like native bumble bees and various flies do the everyday pollination of my squash, eggplant and plum trees.

Here's a link to an article that describes the connection between the honey bee and modern agriculture, and points out that in a thriving diverse ecosystem (like our gardens) we still can rely on the more natural range of pollinators.

Volume 13 of Yami no Matsuei is coming out on the 20th July (only a month to wait, yay!).  It's 200 pages long.

These places have it available for pre-order and they also ship internationally (some restrictions):
amazon.co.jp
CDJapan

You can also pre-order it here, but no idea if they ship internationally:
animate-onlineshop.jp

(Google choked on the full link, so just go to the URL I've given and then type 闇の末裔 13 into the search bar.  Once you find the image for the cover, click on it to see a larger version.)

Of the places I've listed, the one I've had dealings with before is CDJapan, and I was very impressed by them.

Also, for anyone who still reads the LJ Yami no Matsuei community - it seems that all YnM comms on LJ have been set to "moderated".  In other words, sharing info there might not currently be feasible until a moderator turns up.

Sadly, I didn't have a phone on hand to try to get a photo.

But I just found out that a startled fox on a London balcony will, if feeling cornered, drop two storeys onto the top of a garden wall, bounce off that onto the ground, land with somewhat less dignity than it had intended but apparently without injury, and trot off hurriedly.

In my defense, I really didn't mean to make the fox feel cornered; it's just that my immediate, automatic response to "unexpected furry cat-sized creature" is "stay still, make crooning noises at it, try to edge a bit closer." Had I fled, it would have been able to go round to the other side of the balcony, where you only have to drop down half a storey to an adjacent roof.

ETA: I can't help noticing that there is a very well-chewed yellow foam ball on my balcony, which I did not put there.

Also, by way of apology, I have left a dish of water out on the balcony, because it is a heatwave.

Ducklings!
[Two ducklings, one facing the camera and one showing us its fluffy backside.]

Someone left the top gate on our canal lock open today and these two plus their four siblings got stuck at the far end of the lock next to the closed gate. They couldn't scramble out to meet their momma standing on the lock edge. I went out to chivvy her back toward the open gate, and luckily the ducklings trapped in the lock followed her all the way out the gate, which I shut behind them. All seem to be okay if a little peeved with me, and I can take it!

OK, so, for a completely separate RP than my last few posts (still set in an AU of the "Ender's Game" universe, but still), the characters are going to be going to UN Headquarters in New York. Basic theme is that because they're superintelligent and multilingual, they're being loaned by the International Fleet for a bit as (to quote a previous post in this DWRP PSL) "...a translator, protocol monkey, interpreter, and escort to VIPs at the UN" - basically, since they're both on Earth for reasons, and they both live in or near NYC, this is how they earn additional funtime on Earth until everybody decides it's time to send them to their next stop, ICly.

Questions I have re UN Headquarters:

1. What exactly is security like? I've never been to the UN IRL, so I don't even know the basics like "Do they make you have special badges" or "Are the security people armed usually". Not looking for deep details, just what someone working there wou

2. When heads of state (like POTUS for example) come to visit the UN, do they bring their own translators/interpreters, or does the UN provide em?

3. New York gets *cold* in the winter (I know, I live in New Jersey), and the UN campus being right along the East River...Yeah I prefer not to think about what the wind does. Does the UN campus have underground tunnels for movement of people on those stupid cold (or, in the summer, stupid hot) days, or is movement between buildings all via the outdoors?

4. Bonus question, maybe someone here's worked at the UN: How good, or bad, are the staff cafeterias at the UN, and how expensive are they (compared to eating out in NYC usually...)?

Sources tried: Google ("UN Headquarters" and following links from there), UN.org, Wikipedia on UN Headquarters.

Someday in the Whoniverse, an evil alien invading force will threaten to disable humanity's defensive capabilities by making humans remember all of the invasions that they've bizarrely forgotten about. When people are forced to notice things like the gaping hole in Big Ben, the weird monuments, the work camps, the missing family members, the damage to personal property, etc., humanity will be reduced to quivering catatonia.

Disclaimer: This story is based on characters and situations created and owned by JK Rowling, various publishers including but not limited to Bloomsbury Books, Scholastic Books and Raincoast Books, and Warner Bros., Inc. No money is being made and no copyright or trademark infringement is intended.
Warnings: This story is canon compliant until the end of Order of the Phoenix and then goes AU. None of the HBP or Deathly Hallows plot will be used, or the Horcruxes for that matter since this story was planned before we knew the details about those things, and hence has it's own fanon. This includes birthdays and other information that have since been revealed on Pottermore and in further productions.

Summer classes, sabotage, revelations about Draco's father, teaching and the final showdown with Voldemort all await Harry and Draco in this exciting sequel to Gold Tinted Spectacles (LJ | AO3 | Wattpad).
Author's Notes: This is the second story in the Hecatemae universe. It starts up just after the end of the first instalment and I advice reading that one first so you understand the premise. Thanks go to my sister Sophie for the beta reading.

As mentioned in some of our updates from earlier this year, we've updated the Fanlore main page! We hope this version helps new users find help and other relevant info more easily. The design change is still very much open to suggestions — if you have ideas, please add a comment to the talk page or contact us via email.

We're still working on three sections we'd like to add to the new main page. First, a 'help wanted' section will link a few stubs that need work and rotate regularly. Next, 'featured article' and 'featured image' sections, which will spotlight each week one article that editors deem thorough and helpful enough and one image with interesting description and source information.

Here's the process we're considering for the nomination and election of featured articles and images. Please let us know what you think via talk page comment or email!
